In a dramatic turn of events in northwest Iowa, a 34-year-old man, Brandon Duong, has been taken into custody on charges of kidnapping after a high-speed pursuit and an hours-long standoff following an Amber Alert. The incident unfolded when Brandon allegedly took his 7-year-old son, Bryson Duong, from Greene Elementary School in Jefferson, Iowa, in violation of a court order issued in December 2023 that restricted his custody rights.
The Amber Alert:
The Iowa Department of Public Safety issued an Amber Alert for Bryson around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Swift action by law enforcement led to the discovery of Brandon’s vehicle in the area northeast of Remsen in Plymouth County, Iowa, approximately an hour and twenty minutes later. This discovery triggered a high-speed pursuit that concluded in a crash near Sunset Avenue and 160th Street, situated between Remsen and Marcus.
As the pursuit ended, Brandon abandoned the vehicle on foot, carrying Bryson and a rifle. Responding to the situation, multiple law enforcement agencies surrounded the area into which Brandon had ventured. Negotiators worked tirelessly for about three hours, ultimately persuading Brandon to surrender peacefully. During this time, Bryson was also safely found by law enforcement.
Criminal Charges and Legal Proceedings:
Brandon Duong faces serious charges, as the Iowa Department of Public Safety has officially charged him with one count of first-degree kidnapping. He will be transferred to the Greene County Jail to await legal proceedings. The investigation into the incident will continue, led by the Jefferson Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
The well-being of Bryson Duong is of paramount concern, and law enforcement authorities have ensured his safety. As of now, Bryson is in the care of the Department of Homeland Security.
